What is 3D Mammography?

3D mammography—also known as Digital Breast Tomosynthesis—is quickly becoming the new standard in breast imaging.
Unlike traditional 2D mammography that takes just two static images of the breast, 3D mammography captures multiple images from different angles that are then reconstructed into high-resolution, layered views of the breast tissue.
A 3D Mammogram offers a more detailed view than a conventional 2D Mammogram. This allows radiologists to examine breast tissue more clearly, especially for women with dense breast tissues, which are prevalent among Asian women.

How does 3D Mammography work?

3D Mammography acquires multiple image projections as the X-ray tube moves in an arc over the breast. These projections are then reconstructed into a series of thin, stacked images that allow radiologists to examine the breast layer by layer. From the 3D data, a synthetic 2D mammogram can also be generated. This looks similar to a traditional mammogram but is created without taking extra exposures. 3D Mammography exam takes about the same time as a 2D exam with no added discomfort, but the results provide more details and enhanced accuracy.

Why Choose 3D Mammogram?

  • Increased Detection of small and early-stage cancers
  • Enhanced accuracy of breast cancer detection
  • Fewer callbacks for additional views, less anxiety (fewer false-positive cases)
  • Better clarity in dense breast tissue, which is prevalent in Asian women
  • Takes similar time as a 2D exam with no added discomfort
